Frequently asked questions
What is Lorem Ipsum?
A block of scrambled Latin that typesetters have used as filler since the sixteenth century, adapted from a passage of Cicero. It is deliberately not quite readable Latin, so it looks like prose without anybody trying to read it — which is exactly what a layout needs.
Why use placeholder text at all?
Because real copy and lorem ipsum stress a design differently, and because filler stops the wrong conversation at the wrong time. Draft copy in a mockup gets reviewed as copy when you wanted feedback on the layout, while a page full of obvious filler keeps the discussion on spacing, measure and hierarchy.
How much text can I generate?
Choose paragraphs, sentences or words, set the exact number you need and generate — words mode gives exactly that many words, which is what a character-limited field or a truncation test wants. Paragraphs are assembled from sentences of varying length, so the block has the ragged shape of real prose rather than the uniform grey of repeated text, and one button copies the lot.
Can I get plain English filler instead of Latin?
Yes. As well as classic Lorem Ipsum there is a longer Latin vocabulary and an English option built from ordinary words. English filler is the better choice when you are testing line breaking, hyphenation or the width of a column in the language the site will actually ship in.
Can it output HTML paragraph tags?
Yes — switch on HTML tags and each paragraph comes out wrapped in a p element, ready to paste straight into a template or a CMS field instead of being wrapped by hand afterwards.
Does every block have to start with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet"?
Only if you want it to. With the option on, the first paragraph opens with that line and the rest are ordinary filler sentences. That opening is what makes filler instantly recognisable as filler, which is usually a feature, but it can be switched off when you would rather the sample did not announce itself — in a screenshot, say.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. The whole tool is JavaScript running in your own browser, so nothing you type or paste is sent over the network, written to a log or attached to an analytics event. You can confirm it by opening the network tab and watching it stay empty while you work.
