Every factor is the exact legal definition: 1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 foot = 0.3048 m, 1 mile = 1.609344 km, 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg and 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L. Results are rounded only for display.
Amounts can be typed the way they are written: 1,5 or 1.5, 1,250.75 or 1.250,75, fractions such as 3/4 or 2 1/2, heights such as 5'10" in feet or inches, and weights such as 11 st 4 lb or 6 lb 8 oz. Either box can be typed into — the other one follows.
Frequently asked questions
How many pounds are in a kilogram?
One kilogram is 2.20462 pounds, because the pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg — so kg to lbs is multiply by 2.2046, and lbs to kg is divide by it. To convert in your head, double the kilograms and add a tenth of the result: 70 kg doubled is 140, plus 14 makes 154 lb, against an exact 154.32. Going the other way, halve the pounds and take off a tenth — or simply type the number in above.
How do I convert centimetres to inches, or my height to feet and inches?
Divide by 2.54: an inch is exactly 2.54 cm, so 30 cm is 11.81 inches. For a height, convert to inches and split off the feet — 178 cm is 70.08 inches, which is 5 ft 10.1 in. The result above shows that pair automatically, and you can type a height such as 5'10" straight into the feet or inches field to go the other way.
How many kilometres are in a mile?
A mile is exactly 1.609344 km, and a kilometre is about 0.621 miles. A quick estimate: multiply miles by 8 and divide by 5 — 5 miles is about 8 km, so a 5K run is 3.1 miles and a marathon’s 26.2 miles is 42.195 km. Speeds convert with the same ratio, so 60 mph is 96.6 km/h.
How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Multiply by 9/5 and add 32: 20 °C × 1.8 = 36, plus 32 is 68 °F. To go back, subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9. The scales meet at −40, water freezes at 0 °C / 32 °F and boils at 100 °C / 212 °F, and normal body temperature is about 37 °C / 98.6 °F. Temperature is the one common conversion that is not a simple multiplication, which is why a factor table does not work for it.
How do I convert horsepower to kilowatts (hp to kW)?
Multiply by 0.7457: one mechanical horsepower is 745.7 W, so a 300 hp engine makes 223.7 kW, and going back 1 kW is 1.341 hp. European spec sheets usually quote metric horsepower (PS or CV), which is a little smaller at 735.5 W, so 300 PS is 220.6 kW. The Power category lists both horsepowers alongside watts, BTU per hour for heating and cooling equipment, and foot-pounds per second.
Why are US and UK gallons, pints and fluid ounces different?
The two systems kept different definitions after 1824. A US gallon is 3.785 litres and a UK (imperial) gallon 4.546 litres, about 20% more; a US pint is 16 US fluid ounces while an imperial pint is 20 imperial fluid ounces, which are themselves slightly smaller. Recipes, fuel prices and beer measures all depend on which one is meant, so both are listed separately here.
Why does my 1 TB drive show as 931 GB?
Drive makers count in decimal units — 1 TB is 10¹² bytes — while Windows counts in binary units of 2³⁰ bytes but still labels them GB. 10¹² bytes is 931.3 of those binary gigabytes, properly called gibibytes (GiB). Nothing is missing; it is the same number of bytes written in two different units, which the Data tab converts between.
How accurate are these conversions?
Exact to the limit of the arithmetic. Every factor is the legal definition rather than a rounded figure — 1 inch is 2.54 cm, 1 pound 0.45359237 kg, 1 US gallon 3.785411784 L — and results are computed in double precision and shown to seven significant digits, or to the number of decimals you choose. Everything runs in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.
